Wow, what a whirlwind the end of December was! I hope you all had a wonderful and safe holiday season. I will try to do my best to bring you up to speed on what has happened over the past month or so. I'll spread it out a little so it won't be overwhelming. ;o) First thing that comes to mind is the local gallery opening. One of my images was honored as part of the Laurel Magazines' Cover Art Exhibit at the Louise Bascom Art Gallery in Highlands, NC. I have won awards before for different things, but it was thrilling to see my work on the wall with other works by some gifted artists. It was a pleasure meeting everyone that evening as well. A first for me.....here are a few pictures of the opening.

I just heard this being discussed on the radio and have to tell you, this bugs me. (My planned ramblings can wait until tomorrow.) The radio show host was saying that the government of California (the California Energy Commission specifically) wants to install radio controlled thermostats in private homes that would allow them to remotely control the temperature of the home. (For more information, just click here to read a write-up by the Utility Consumers' Action Network .) While they say that they will use it most often in case of emergency, it is also thought that they will use the system to make 'corrections' to reduce energy consumption. While homeowners will be able to override the latter corrections, in the case of emergency homeowners will not be able to change the thermostat settings.

You know that the unintended consequences will be that energy consumption may actually go UP as folks who are tired of being too cold/hot will go buy electric space heaters or fans. Or, worse yet for some smog-prone California cities, start cutting and burning more wood in their fireplaces. * the lack of foresight on the part of the commission is just stunning * While I am all for smart use of energy, I do not like the direction this takes with respect to the government acting as a nanny... this is not the function of government as directed by our founding fathers. I can't say it clear enough -- it is time to reduce the size and power of the government. I'm not saying to do anything drastic, but when you go to vote in upcoming elections, ask yourself if the candidate will build up the government power or take it down a notch? Do we really need the government to take care of us? Aren't we capable of learning what we need to to take care of ourselves? This is a large reason why the idea of universal health care is so frightening to me, but that's a rant for a different day..... Wow
